Want to Market Your Book Effectively? Start here...

In my inbox one day this past week:

Hi Honoree, I've checked out all of your books. Which one should I start with to sell a lot of books? I want to be a master book marketer.

I have two answers:

  • If you haven't already published your book, there's still time to make it awesome (see below).
  • If you've already published your book, cross-check it against the list below. Note: You may have to start over. #sorrynotsorry

Be sure to read Chapter 1 in You Must Market Your Book and commit Chapter 7 in Write Your First Nonfiction Book to memory. :)

💣 Truth bomb: You can't effectively market a book that lacks professional quality. The harsh truth is that many self-published authors fail because their books look amateur, regardless of the content.

I've reviewed thousands of self-published books, and I can spot an unprofessional book instantly. So can readers, bookstore owners, and prospective clients. Hint: they are mostly unforgiving and will assume how you published your book is how you'll provide products and services. 😳

(Now, this is not necessarily true and one very nice reader pointed out a very pesky and persistent typo in one of my books this week. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Perfection is the goal and you must at least show effort in that direction...)

For those just tuning in, a truly professional book requires these four cornerstones to be in order:

  1. A compelling cover design that fits your genre
  2. Flawless editing and proofreading
  3. Professional interior formatting
  4. Persuasive book description/sales copy

Missing even one of these elements shouts "amateur" to potential readers, killing your marketing efforts before they begin.

Make sure your book makes the cut and does what you're writing it to do! For a complete professional publishing checklist, grab my book You Must Market Your Book here.

See you tomorrow!

Reading Time: <47 seconds As each year winds down, I always find myself reflecting on the past few years. This year is no exception. I'm contemplating just what kept me "so busy" (was I actually productive?) and what actually moved me forward in my empire-building pursuit. (This is an annual practice I highly recommend, by the way.) I look at what I created, including what compounded (and what didn't). What I'd do again -- and what I surely would not. What I need to start doing, stop doing,...

Reading Time: 21 seconds The holiday break is, blessedly, almost here. We're taking Mrs. Claus (Byron's mom) on a pre-Christmas vacation and it's going to be so fun! Now, for most people, it'll be a blur of Netflix, leftovers, and "I'll figure it out in January." But you are not most people! You're looking for ways to accelerate your growth and build your empire and you want to use this downtime strategically so 2026 doesn't just happen to you. These are exactly why I wrote Tall Order! I...

I woke up at 2:30 a.m. this morning and wondered, "Is it time to get up yet?" Yes, I'm that person, excited and ready for the day to begin. If you're anything like me (maybe not the 2:30 a.m. part, and to be transparent, I didn't actually get up until 4:30 a.m.), you're always looking for ways to accelerate your...
