Marketing Your Book, Part 18: Sign up as a HARO Source

A lot of authors think they need to spend big money hiring a PR firm to get the word out about their book. While I don't entirely disagree, there are much better and more effective options (as well as less expensive). Help a Reporter Out (HARO) connects journalists with relevant experts, and you, my author friend, are the expert of your niche! Once you sign up (visit helpareporter.com), you’ll receive an email up to three times per day, and each email includes media opportunities. You could be quoted in an article, interviewed for a live broadcast, or both!

HARO is a great way to see what journalists, bloggers, and other media are looking for, real time.

Keep in mind:

1. You’ll want to reply quickly for the best chance of getting selected. Many times, there’s a looming deadline and you’ll want to capitalize on an opportunity as quickly as possible.

2. Ask for a link back to your site, and include it.

3. Being gracious and giving grace goes a long way. You never know when you’ll be asked to be a source again.

4. Add your media mentions to your media page on your website.

5. Have fun! The more fun you’re having, the more fun your interviewer and their audience will have (and fun people are likable).

I don’t necessarily think people consult the media for what books to read, yet anytime an author can be mentioned in the media the chances of discoverability do increase and provides third-party validation. After you sign up for HARO and get your first mention, be sure to let me know.

Reading time: 41.5 seconds I've told you about my friend's husband who, while she was reading my book, said, "Who is Honoree to write a book?" (I know, so rude, right?) If you're asking that question of yourself, i.e., "Who am I to write a book about this?" you're wading in dark waters, my friend. Seek the shore immediately! This single question has prevented more books from being written than probably anything else. It's based in fear (which is not a good thing in this case) that you're not...

Reading time: 30 seconds Spoiler alert: You have a book inside you. (I know, this is actually not news to you.) Here's how I know it, whether we've personally connected yet or not: I because you have expertise that others need (actually, almost everyone does, if you think about it). But you, you've solved problems, overcome challenges, and developed skills that could transform someone else's life or business fast--you've figured out a few things along the way others would pay to know. They...

Reading time: 35 seconds I'm oft-quoted as saying, "I'm a writer, not a math-er." But if you give me a sentence with a plus and an equal sign, we're in business! Here's what I'm talking about: Expertise + Authority = Opportunity Can we go so far as to say I'm facilitating an equation? :) If you've spent a lot of time focusing entirely on building expertise, attending conferences, earning degrees and certifications, and accumulating lots of experience, you might be both incredibly...
