Plan your entire book before you write a single word

So you got the blueprint (Write Your First Nonfiction Book), right? (I mean, if you want to write your book and don't want to stress out about it, now's the time!)

Speaking of now, let's talk about how proper planning pays plenty. :)

What I've seen, working with hundreds of aspiring authors, is that some people can read about the 8-chapter formula and just start writing. Look-choose-move. They see the structure and off they go.

Let's face it, those people are unicorns--few and far between!

Most people (normal people like you and me--👋🏻) need to see their entire book mapped out (you know, outlined) before they feel confident enough to write their Introduction, let alone Chapter One.

That's why I created a companion journal for Write Your First Nonfiction Book. For ease, I titled it the Write Your First Nonfiction Book Journal. Shocking, I know.* Anyway, it provides worksheets that effortlessly guide you to:

Plan your front matter:

  • What's going in your special invitation?
  • What should your introduction say?
  • Who might write your foreword? (Do you even need one? Hint: nope.)

Design each chapter:

  • What stories could you share in Chapter 2?
  • What's your simple formula in Chapter 4? (Yes, you're gonna need one.)
  • What advanced strategies go in Chapter 7?

Maximize your back matter:

  • What offers will you include?
  • How will you continue the relationship with your reader?
  • What's your call-to-action? (This matters more than you think.)

The result? A complete outline of your entire book. Every chapter. Every section. All planned out.

Then when you sit down to write, you're not staring at a blank page wondering what to say.

You've got a process so you know that in: "Chapter 3, Section 2: you should Write about your 5-step process. Here's what each step should cover..."

Most people complete the journal in 2-3 hours. Some do it in one sitting with a pot of coffee. Others spread it over a weekend, a week or sevearl (there's no right or wrong way or timeline, BTW).

When you have clarity for your entire book, there's no more "what do I write, where, and why?" for you! You've moved quickly from inaction to outline to writing. You'll be confident that a rough, first draft isn't far behind!

Get the journal here -- It comes in paperback format only and it's just $9.99.

Start with the book if you haven't yet (still just 99¢).

ICYMI: For less than $11, you can have a process it took me about thirty books to master.

Also: If someone you know mentioned writing a book in 2026, feel free to send them this email.

Tomorrow: What if you want video walkthroughs and real author examples? (Spoiler: I made a whole course for that.)

See you then!

P.S. I know planning feels slower at first. But I promise it makes the actual writing SO much faster. And less painful. Trust me on this—I've written 68+ books.

*You can create a companion for your nonfiction book, too--a workbook, journal, companion guide--the sky is the limit!

Reading time: < 30 seconds Yesterday I talked about the overwhelm that stops smart people from writing their books. Today, I want to catalyze those same smart people (you, you might be amongst the people!). Step One: Get the blueprint. Write Your First Nonfiction Book is legit your roadmap here. It's not pure inspiration (although obvi I've included some of that). I don't work from theory or guesstimations. You know, just a battle-tested step-by-step formula you can rest your hat on. Here's...

Reading Time: 56 seconds (I'm wordy today.) Quick update: Our sweet Shadow has a large mass cancerous tumor. I had been hoping for an outing, and it came on Saturday but certainly not in the way I was expecting. Turns out labs can detect cancer--and Rogue took a sniff at Shadow's hind leg and shook her head like she smelled something bad. So Byron took a look and after a quick call to the vet, we made our way (on foot) down the icy driveway, borrowed a truck, and navigated the still icy...

Reading Time: 16 seconds Day 8: Still iced in. Mother Nature is running on her own timeline, and arguing with her seems unproductive. Instead of frustration, I'm choosing gratitude. (I've got this indefatigable positive attitude, remember? "That's awesome!") Every morning, I make a gratitude list: I'm so happy and grateful: I can work from home. We have power and food. For the unexpected gift of uninterrupted time to think, create, and plan. That the roads will eventually clear and life will...
