12/18/24 Being “high maintenance” kept me in bed (and that’s a good thing!)

Reading time: 1 quick minute

Hi Reader!

I’ve been MIA for a few days (thank you for your messages, again!), and here's why (and it ties directly into something I teach my empire builders about sustainable success).

You see, between holiday festivities, work commitments, and fighting off feeling a little puny, my body was sending some pretty clear signals. And while the “hustle culture” part of my brain was screaming “push through!” my high performance brain knew better.

I chose sleep over writing emails, reading, and even eating cookies. (I know you know that's a big deal for me! 😂)

Here’s the truth:

Being high maintenance about your rest isn’t a weakness, it’s a success strategy.

Just like a Formula 1 car needs more careful maintenance than your average sedan, high-performing authors need to be particular about their energy management.Think about it: Would you rather…

- Push through and produce mediocre work while feeling awful
- Or rest strategically and come back ready to create something extraordinary?

I chose the latter. And you know what? During those extra hours of sleep, while my body was getting better, my brain was actually solving problems and generating ideas (funny how that works!).

Tomorrow, I’ll share about a completely counterintuitive way to scale your book business. But for now, I want you to ask yourself: Are you being “high maintenance” enough about your rest?

Sweet dreams and I'll see you tomorrow!

Reading Time: 46 seconds I’ve learned a lot from working with hundreds (thousands!) of writers: The question someone asks is rarely the real problem. Someone asks me about a title, but what they’re really asking is, “Will this book reach the right people?” Someone asks about rapid release, but what they’re really asking is, “How do I build momentum without burning out?” Someone asks how to market their book, but what they’re really asking is, “How do I do this in a way that actually fits who...

Reading Time: 33 seconds Over the years, I’ve noticed something, Reader. No matter which course someone is in, there are always a handful of questions that come up again and again. Questions like: “Is this the right title and subtitle for my book?” “What’s the job of my book — and how do I know if it’s doing that job?” “Should I do rapid release… or space my books out?” “How do I actually build an advance reader team that works?” “What should I do next once the book is done?” These are not...

Reading Time: 30 seconds There's a whole lot of "new year, new you" going on right now--and I think the old you is probably just great. I also think you probably want to have a really great year--one where you feel like you left everything you could on the mat and made the most of the year. Yesterday I got to give an impromptu talk to a networking group about this very topic, and I thought I'd share my talking points with you. I'll start by sharing where I focus my time: Publishing 10-20...
