Give, Give, Give: How the Law of Reciprocity Actually Works

Reading Time: <30 seconds

We've all heard, Ask and ye shall receive. (Matthew 7:7).

But what about: Give, give, give, and you'll receive so much you'll need a bigger place to put it?

That's how the Law of Reciprocity works.

It's sometimes hard to need something (money, clients, goods, services, opportunities) and yet focus on giving to others. And yet we know all about it (sometimes it's called karma).

In business networking, it's an easy concept to remember and do: discover what someone needs and take action to help them—even imperfectly—which activates the Law of Reciprocity naturally.

Here's what true and counterintuitive: where you give isn't always where you receive. In fact, it almost never comes back. Your job is to do what you can to help others, and the goodness will flow back your way from unexpected places.

Remember: give without keeping score or expecting anything in return from the recipient, and you're going to find some pretty generous rewards come your way.

You're not going to be surprised I talk all about this in my book, Business Networking. Get it here if you haven't already: https://amzn.to/4a27rS5 -- it also makes a great stocking stuffer or anonymous gift for a less-than-awesome networker you know. 🤓

Thanks to everyone who's bought the book and a high five to those who've left one of the 29 5-star reviews. Appreciate you so much!

I'll be back in your inbox tomorrow.

Reading Time: <18 seconds I know AI and CRMs are all the rage, but I'm more of a visual person. More than 20 years ago I created a tool I still use to this day, the 12x12 Matrix. (Hear me out, sometimes analog and visual works wonders!) It helps me see who is in my network and the next time I need to check in, follow-up, or reach out to them. If you've never heard of it and you want to be a more efficient, effective networker, here's a little of the skinny: You identify 11 complementary...

Reading Time: <30 seconds I like a "one-and-done" potential client conversation as much as the next gal (and they do, thankfully, happen!), but the truth is, there are five distinct stages in relationship building and you have to navigate them effectively: Nice to Meet You → Getting to Know You → I Think I Like You → Starting to Trust You → I Trust You (and will therefore give you my time, money, and access to "all the things." Whether you're developing a new client relationship or looking to...

Reading Time: <30 seconds I'm fond of saying, "I'm a writer, not a math-er," but I do love statistics and rules, especially when they both provide valuable insight and align with my philosophy. Such as these very interesting statistics & rules: 80% of sales are made after the 5th contact (but keep going, sometimes you have to follow-up as many as 12 times!) Only 2% of people buy at the first meeting, which means most salespeople give up (way!) too soon. The Prospect Rule of 7 says: A prospect...
