📘 The two things readers decide in the first 60 seconds

Reading time: < 30 seconds

I promised the first two keys in The Bestselling Book Formula and here they are:

🔑 Key #1: Easy to Read

First and foremost, your book must be easy to read. Don't get confused, I don't mean "dumbed down," or elementary. Hint: The average American reads at a 7th grade level. Make no mistake, though, even highly educated readers prefer content that doesn't make them "work." Who has ever put down a book and said, "That was just too easy to read." (Not one person. Ever.)

Keep this in mind when writing: Short sentences. Short words. Big ideas in plain language.

🔑 Key #2: Easy to Remember

Lots of authors leave money on the table by not using this key.

Think about The Miracle Morning. Even people who reverse it to say, "The Morning Miracle" are still remembering it (enough). That's not an accident! This title is crisp, catchy, and connects something people want (a miracle) with something they struggle with (mornings).

Your title, your formula, your core concept—they need stickiness. What the heck does that mean? It means being concise, a little unexpected, and giving readers a something they can hang onto mentally, a mental hook if you will. They'll be able to recall it (and this is important!) when they're recommending your book to a friend at dinner on a Tuesday.

If your reader can't remember your book title in the moment it matters most--you know, the one when they're sharing about it--you've lost that reader and every reader they would have sent your way. 🤦🏻‍♀️

These two keys alone can reshape how you approach your next book — or how you look at the one you've already written.

Tomorrow I'm nice so I'll share Keys #3 and #4, because these are where the real magic happens.

Reading time: < 30 seconds As promised, here are Keys #3 and #4—and this is where The Bestselling Book Formula gets really fun. 🔑 Key #3: Easy to Do Every long-term bestseller I analyzed in my pursuit of earning excellence has a reason it was successful--and a formula. This formula isn't vague, and it's an actual, repeatable process readers can follow. (It's also easy. Otherwise your readers can't--won't--do it. Which means no bestselling book for you!)) The SAVERS from The Miracle Morning....

Reading time: < 30 seconds I read a book recently and could not, for the life of me, remember the name. It had been a gift (no Amazon purchase history), wasn't on Kindle (couldn't look for it that way), and the title wasn't "the best." Really fun book, made an impact, no idea who wrote it or what the title was. Has this ever happened to you? You read a book, loved it, and then tried to recommend it to someone, only to completely blank on the title or the author's name? (Come on, throw me a...

Reading time: < 30 seconds Three years ago this week, The Bestselling Book Formula came into the world. But you know what? I almost didn't write it. I sent a newsletter about the book-writing formula I'd been using for years. I'd discovered a way to analyze why some books sell for decades (while others hardly ever sell). My friend and ghostwriter-extraordinaire Kent Sanders read it and said the sentence that got me thinking: "This needs to be a book." I wasn't sure it had legs, but after some...
