Three years ago this week, The Bestselling Book Formula came into the world. But you know what? I almost didn't write it.

I sent a newsletter about the book-writing formula I'd been using for years. I'd discovered a way to analyze why some books sell for decades (while others hardly ever sell). My friend and ghostwriter-extraordinaire Kent Sanders read it and said the sentence that got me thinking:

"This needs to be a book."

I wasn't sure it had legs, but after some additional thought, added it to my production schedule. As I had done for more than a decade, I wrote it during my 6-7 a.m. writing sessions. That is still, most of the time, my daily practice: watching the sun come up over my yard, coffee at the ready, writing the words. And about 15,000 words later, the book was done.

I almost didn't write it because I second-guessed whether anyone would be interested in it, besides me. Turns out, I was on to something.

The book is short, purposeful, and without a word to spare. The formula inside is simple—and simple is my whole point.
